'Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms. It is about understanding.' - William Paul Thurston

Key Principles

A positive teacher mindset and strong subject knowledge are key to pupil success in mathematics. Our teaching team have high expectations of everyone and we develop this within the class with a ‘Can do / can’t do yet’ attitude. Our children use a mixture of practical apparatus (manipulatives), images and representations (See year group visual guidance on manipulatives and visual representations).  High quality resources are available in each classroom and available at all times.  We follow a the nationally recognised 'Mastery' approach to teaching and learning maths (see below for more information).

The school's own Calculation Policy is followed throughout the school and available on the website to support parents with homework.  Advanced learners are not left without challenge, achievement is supported through higher-level questioning and extension tasks - RAPID GRASPERS (on pink paper in books).  We encourage reasoning rather than just the answer where children are asked to explain their thinking.  To assist in widening the ways to explain themselves we display stem sentences on working walls or in bookmarks.

We do insist on the precise use of mathematical terms and vocabulary e.g. calculation not sum; expecting that these are also spelt correctly.   Working walls are referred to during lessons by teachers and pupils. These include visuals, targeting vocabulary, manipulatives (see it, say it, make it). Which encourages 'sticky learning' turning into knowledge and remembered long term.
