Assessment is an integral part of our leaning and teaching and helps teachers and staff to tailor work to children's interests and learning needs. There is no longer a national standardised system and schools have the freedom to choose a system they feel meets the needs of all stakeholders. Appleton Thorn Primary School has adopted an assessment system that we feel you will understand and that clearly shows the ability level of your child. If you are unsure how we are assessing your child or you do not understand the assessment information we give you at termly parents evenings then please come in and speak your child's class teacher. 

All children are assessed regularly using a variety of methods such as observation, discussion and marking. More formal testing also takes place as outlined below. 

Reception children

Baseline Assessment, Foundation Stage Profile and ongoing assessment using observations and small group work

Children in Year 2

End of Key Stage tasks (Spring / Summer terms) as well as termly assessments

Children in Years 1, 3, 4 and 5

Termly assessments using our summative assessment system. Year 4 also undergo a national timestable test.

Children in Year 6

Statutory SATs tests (May) as well as termly assessments.

At Appleton Thorn we acknowledge that each child has different strengths in many areas and recognise that the National Curriculum tests, and related results publication, reflect only certain key aspects of learning in Reading, Writing and Maths. Therefore, we continually seek to celebrate all children’s achievements across the curriculum and school life in general. 

Notwithstanding this, we do expect the children to take the tests seriously and to do their best.   We set challenging individual and collective targets and allocate time in school for revision and reasonable test practice.  Any child who is not making the progress that we would expect recieved personalised targetted interventions, in either small groups or individual sessions in addition to their English and Maths lessons.  We aim for all children to achieve their best, sustain their knowledge and skills in subsequent classes and maintain a positive attitude to learning.
